These tribes are not federally recognized, however, they are currently seeking this status. If these tribes receive federal recognition, they will be able to negotiate a gaming compact with the state of Michigan to conduct casino style gaming.

Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians

The Department of Interior declined to recognize the Burt Lake Band last fall. Last year, Congressman Bart Stupak introduced legislation seeking to have Congress recognize the tribe, and he vowed to continue to work with the tribe to seek recognition.

Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians

Prior to conducting gaming, the tribe will have to enter into a gaming compact with the state of Michigan. The tribe is looking at plans to build a new casino near the downtown Muskegon lakeshore.
