Proposed Tribal Casinos

Nottawaseppi Band of Potawatomi Indians
Propos
e to build a casino in Battle Creek. The tribe has a compact with the state of Michigan. The tribe has agreed that gaming will not take place until the Federal Court of Appeals decides whether the proposed location is part of the tribe's initial reservation under IGRA.

Gun Lake Band of Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians Propose to build a casino in Wayland Township. The Gun Lake Band is awaiting approval of its land in trust application and, signed a compact with Gov. Granholm on March 9, that is awaiting legislative approval.

Tribes Seeking Federal Recognition

These tribes are not federally recognized, however, they are currently seeking this status. If these tribes receive federal recognition, they will be able to negotiate a gaming compact with the state of Michigan to conduct casino style gaming.

Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians
The Department of Interior declined to recognize the Burt Lake Band last fall. Last year, Congressman Bart Stupak introduced legislation seeking to have Congress recognize the tribe, and he vowed to continue to work with the tribe to seek recognition.

Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians
Prior to conducting gaming, the tribe will have to enter into a gaming compact with the state of Michigan. The tribe is looking at plans to build a new casino near the downtown Muskegon lakeshore.
