MI Native
American Casinos
The state of Michigan
has entered Class III casino gaming compacts with 11 Native American
tribes. The first set of compacts was entered in 1993, and the state
entered a second set of compacts with four tribes in 1998.
Currently, there are 19
Class III casinos that operate in various areas of Michigan. Two
additional projects are under construction by two tribes that
entered compacts in 1998, but have been subject to several legal and
regulatory challenges that have delayed their development projects.
There is the potential
that several other tribes will be in a position to approach the
state to initiate Class III compact negotiations. In early March
2007, Gov. Granholm announced that her administration entered a
Class III compact with the Gun Lake Band and referred the compact to
the Michigan Legislature.
